Bookends Competition

In conjunction with our second exhibition, to be held on Sunday 25th January 2009

Members are invited to build a module for inclusion in a layout with individual scenes on each section, multiple module entries will be accepted but each will be judged separately. Because not everybody can make it to Crewe photographic entries will be accepted up to January 23rd, allowing time for them to be printed and mounted on card for display at the show.

Entrants may chronicle the building of their modules in the "Bookends Competition" section of the forum under individual threads if they wish, or they can keep the entries under wraps until judging is due if they prefer. Please keep your own modules in separate threads though, if posted in the general discussion thread details may be overlooked.

Modules which will be attending our show for judging must have their length (including the four inch bridge section) notified via the forum by the end of November so that suitable arrangements for the display tables can be made.

The entries will not form a continuous scene but will be joined by non-scenic bridging sections, giving a series of vignettes which trains will run through. Members bringing their entries to the show will also be required to bring a bridging section for each entry so that the modules can be assembled into a unit with a single track running throughout. The track will be OO gauge, code 100 for the through line but sidings may use a finer section of rail if desired.

The club will provide two additional boards to be used as fiddleyards at each end of the assembly, these will be capable of holding a short goods train or a two coach passenger train and will be non-scenic. There will also be a controller provided for the layout, which will be a standard 12vDC power supply (not DCC).

The module dimensions are shown below.

A. Baseboard width. Min 6" max 12"
B. Baseboard length Min 12" max 36"
C. Front edge to track centreline at baseboard ends Min 3"
D. Backscene height Max 9"
The backscene should along the rear and wrap round both ends to close the module in scenically.
E. Bridging section length 4".
The track on the bridging section will have fishplates attached for alignment with the track on the module at each end. Track on the module will have the rail fixing on the sleepers cut away to accommodate these fishplates.
F. Power connection at left, chocolate block with 12" wires attached. Red = front rail, black = rear rail.
These jumpers will act as back up for the fishplate connections.
G. Power connection at right end, chocolate block connector colour coded to match F.
H. Baseboard depth (tabletop to bottom of track) ˝ inch or 12mm (commercially available plywood or MDF) thickness.
Slight differences will be compensated by the bridge sections and shimming with card.

Scenic treatment is purely up to the individual as each module (or group of modules) will be a self contained entity with only the train connecting each to its neighbour. Holes in the backscenes at baseboard ends and any other buildings or bridges must clear the OO scale British loading gauge (click here for details) but scenes may represent whatever the builder wishes.

These are hastily drawn sketches to give a rough idea of how the modules will fit together.

The provisional guidelines are so that members may commence work on the project whenever they wish. If there are any further suggestions please submit them as soon as possible so that everybody can seen them before too much work is done.

Judging will be carried out by the exhibitors at our show. A ballot box will be available and all the entries, both in the assembled layout and as photos on display, will be numbered. All exhibitors and traders will be issued with a single voting slip per stand. In the event of a tie there will be a casting vote held by an independent judge.

The prize for the winner will be announced at a later date.
